The Sound of Music
Help us keep our new Instruments safe!
Read Below!

The first time I was on our campus was in 1998 when our school hosted one of the Northern California Conference Office of Education Principals’ Council. These meetings happen several times a year at the NCC Office and at schools throughout Northern California. I am sure I met several current school families at that time especially those who helped put on events and catered the lunch that was provided. Little did I realize though, how special PHAA is.

At the time of my visit, we were invited to take a look at the campus. I have always found it fun and educational to tour other schools, you always learn a lot. While I was walking around, I walked into the most amazing music room (current library and computer lab). It was large with the band set up on one side and the choir on the other. I believe the choir was practicing when I walked in. I thought what a lucky school and music teacher to have such a facility. Imagine my surprise when I came back just a few short years later as the principal to find no music room. What went wrong? The short answer is nothing!

Pleasant Hill Adventist Academy has grown considerably over the years. I know there are many people who helped make PHAA what it is today. Michael Spencer has had no small part in this growth. I believe a significant reason PHAA has grown is due in large part to Mr. Spencer’s leadership in the school music program. His program and the school has been so successful that he has been moved more than once because of school growth. He now shares the Multipurpose room with other classes, church groups and other groups, no place to call his own or to keep instruments safe and out of the way of other events. Even his former office has been made into a small classroom! I guess you could say - is this the cost of success?????

The school is currently in the process of raising funds and getting permits to build a music storage room that opens into the multipurpose room. We believe we will have permits in hand this February. Our new instruments need a place to live safely. Mr. Spencer has worked with tremendous limitations to the benefit of our school. I invite each one of you to pray and possibly donate to this project. Our goal is to have the storage room finished by next school year if not by the end of this year. Just imagine having the whole multipurpose room for events while having a place for our instruments to be stored safely. Imagine the sound of music as only Mr. Spencer can produce it continuing. We believe this storage room will cost approximately $30,000 not counting cabinets for the instruments. Our new instruments cost $27,000. I again invite all readers to be a part of this special project through prayers and donations. We did it with the gym floor; we can do it for the music program! If you happen to see Mr. Spencer, feel free to let him know how much he is appreciated. Few (I actually don’t know any) music teachers are willing to attempt teaching K – 12, let alone do it as well as the amazing Mr. Spencer.

Mr. Emmerson
